Snowy Spells of My Youth

by Michelle Oram

fairy tale
crystals
toss a spell
frosting tinsel
sheets of white
on mighty historic
oaks and evergreens

enchanted I watch

as pixie dust
unveils sacred
animal kingdom worlds
trails plowed by herds of caribou
secret artic fox tunnels
where kits get lost in play
nomadic snowy owls coast
the silken melodies
of ambient sound frequencies
of crackling ice

and I am swept

in a cascade
of frozen glistened lakes
my tongue tries to catch
the magic
my cheeks raw with excitement
skated memories
dance and float
glide and slide
followed by giggles warmed
in hot chocolate
